Task

Design a tote bag artwork

Artist Statement

Our potential to become better individuals is intertwined with the improvement of society as a whole. By playing a crucial role, we can contribute to the well-being and functioning of our community. This creates a reciprocal relationship.

The theme “Making a difference: starting with me” embodies this concept. To visually represent this idea, we designed a central “me” character surrounded by “links” that form a chain, filling up a heart. This heart symbolises the collective role we all play in making a positive impact.

The “me” character is coloured red to signify courage and compassion. It serves as a reminder for us to embody and spread these traits. The red radiates outward into a spectrum of colours, representing inclusivity and equality. This pattern draws attention back to the “me” character, reminiscent of the joy a rainbow brings and the way we remember its colours. The bold, solid typeface used in the text underscores the trait of courage, enhancing the coherence of the key message.

Considering the design is on a tote bag, we considered scale and depth. From a distance, the heart, the “me” character, and the chain of links are immediately visible. Up close, the detailed shapes conveying messages add a layer of visual interest, engaging the viewer’s curiosity. This interaction sets in motion the communication of the key message: “I can make a difference.”
